The Coolest Job You Probably Didn’t Even Know Existed

We spend a lot of time each day looking at, tweeting, and texting emoji, but few of us get paid to do so. Keith Broni, on the other hand, makes his living doing just that. Last December, London-based translation company Today Translations put out a call for an “emoji translator.” The job listing made news, partly because of its novelty — it’s believed to be the first role of its kind — and partly because it just sounds like so much fun. Who doesn’t want to spend their day looking at emoji? Today Translations received over 500 applications, and the interview process took five months, but Broni emerged as the winning candidate. You can’t major in emoji translation (at least, not yet), but Broni’s educational background does complement the role

A Fan Painted Mark Zuckerberg’s Face On Her Nails, And Here’s What Happened Next

Mark Zuckerberg  is a famous dude and, as fans do with anyone who is famous, they like to show their appreciation in … inventive ways. One particular fan of the Zuck decided to really nail down her love for the Facebook founder. On Thursday, Zuckerberg shared a manicured hand on his Instagram that features the Facebook logo, the “heart” and “like” reactions, and, naturally, Zuck’s likeness. Whether he was more enamored or surprised by the gesture isn’t known, but he definitely liked it enough to share : A post shared by Mark Zuckerberg (@zuck) on Jun 22, 2017 at 4:58pm PDT The image is accompanied by a caption that indicates this is the first time Zuck’s seen something like this and the hashtag #fcs2017.

Google Search Is Doing Irreparable Harm To Muslims

Google asks its employees to “Do the right thing.” At least, that’s what its revised 2015 motto states in an upgrade from the original company maxim, “ Don’t be evil . ” But when a user searches Google for information on Islam, the results often link to propaganda, anti-Muslim hate and outright lies. The algorithm for the world’s largest search engine is definitely not doing the right thing ― especially when it comes to the first page of results, where most users stop their searches. Basic searches for words like “Muslim” and “Islam” return reasonable results with links to reputable sites. But more specific terms, like “sharia,” “jihad” or “taqiyya” ― often co-opted by white supremacists ― return links to Islamophobic sites filled with misinformation. The same thing happens with the autofill function

Former Commish Michael Copps: ‘Maybe The Worst FCC I’ve Ever Seen’

In just a few short months, the Trump wrecking ball has pounded away at rules and regulations in virtually every government agency. The men and women the president has appointed to the Cabinet and to head those agencies are so far in sycophantic lockstep, engaged in dismantling years of protections in order to make real what White House strategist Steve Bannon infamously described as “the deconstruction of the administrative state.” The Federal Communications Commission is not immune. Its new chair, Republican Ajit Pai, embraces the Trump doctrine of regulatory devastation. “It’s basic economics,” he declared in an April 26 speech at Washington’s Newseum . “The more heavily you regulate something, the less of it you’re likely to get.” His goal is to stem the tide of media reform that in recent years has made significant progress for American citizens. Even as we rely more than ever on digital media for information, education and entertainment, Pai and his GOP colleagues at the FCC seek to turn back the clock and increase even more the corporate control of cyberspace.

School Employee May Be Fired For Claiming Gays ‘Should Be Killed’ On Facebook

An Ohio school employee is likely to lose his job after posting that gay people “ should be killed or at least relocated ” ahead of a local Pride celebration.  Chris Dodds, who has worked as a garage assistant supervisor with Columbus City Schools since 2004, reportedly posted the hateful message on a Facebook page for the 2017 Columbus Pride parade and festival  last week. In the since-deleted post, Dodds said he hoped Friday’s festival, which has drawn more than 500,000 people in the past, “turns out like the Boston Marathon ,” a pointed reference to the 2013 bombing that killed three people and injured several hundred others. Take a look at a screenshot of the alleged post, courtesy of Change.org , below.   The post quickly prompted an online petition calling for Dodds’ dismissal.

7 Scary Things That Can Happen If You Neglect Your Kid’s Online Privacy

By Caroline Knorr, Common Sense Media If you don’t want to have the bejesus scared out of you, don’t talk to an expert on kids’ online privacy. If you knew what was really out there ― online predators, identity thieves, data miners ― you’d lock up the internet and throw away the key. Your Consumer Rights Are Disappearing, But Here’s How To Protect Yourself Now

It’s not your imagination. Your consumer rights are vanishing. Not a day seems to go by that you don’t see news of another consumer regulation being dismantled, a law coming undone, an anti-consumer executive order being signed. “From the very beginning of his campaign, Donald Trump made it clear that he intends to win the economy,” says Alex Geisinger, a law professor at Drexel University. “Touting a pro-growth agenda, the administration is taking steps to cut so-called government red tape, and, with that, a series of repeals on regulations across various industries.” If you run a business, these may be the best of times
